Unlocking Global Visibility for a Molecular Spectroscopy Innovation Leader

Microscope - SciComms Consultancy for Photoluminescence and Spectroscopy Instrumentation manufacturer

A global leader in state-of-the-art spectroscopic instrumentation, my client had built an exceptional reputation for engineering high-value systems with a product range including Photoluminescence and Fluorescence, Raman, UV-Vis, and Transient Absorption spectrometers, alongside advanced laser systems

Because these instruments represent a massive capital investment for laboratories, potential clients almost always require pre-purchase sample testing.

When I looked at their digital presence, I saw a world-class company with a classic B2B problem - they had incredible authority, but their website wasn’t being found by the global researchers who needed them most. Traffic was stalling at just 4,500 visitors a month.

The Problem: Goldmine R&D Content Hidden in "Dead" PDFs

The company had a massive competitive advantage boasting an extensive library of deep-dive application notes authored by their expert PhD scientists. These notes detailed specific customer testing, machine configurations, and precise scientific results.

The problem? They were treating these invaluable assets like printed brochures. They were uploading them as static, non-searchable PDF files.

To Google, these PDFs were essentially invisible. Because their brilliant scientific team were experts in spectroscopy, not search engine optimisation, the company was completely hiding its best lead-generation assets from the world.

My Solution: Bridging Deep Science with SEO and SciComms

I knew that if we could unlock those application notes and make them searchable, we could capture the exact high-intent search traffic the sales team needed. I designed a two-part transformation strategy:

No. 1: I Taught the Scientists to Think in Terms of SEO

We wanted to weaponise the team's existing scientific expertise for online discoverable, leading to increased organic growth and sales enquiries. To achieve this, I developed and delivered a custom SEO training framework, including vital key word research, delivered this to their in-house scientists, sales and marketing teams focusing on:

  • Scientific Search Intent: Teaching the team how global researchers actually type queries into search engines when looking for spectrometers. Not only what key words were being used but, importantly, what was the search volume for those key words. We wanted to ensure that content was effectively targeted, capturing relevant search terms with good search volumes and that their weeks and months of extensive scientific research could be find in the right place and at the right time for potential customers.
  • On-Page Mechanics: Training them to naturally weave targeted, long-tail technical keywords into meta content, header hierarchies (H1–H3), and image alt tags without compromising scientific accuracy.

No. 2: Strip Out the PDFs and Rebuilt their SciComms for Search

Next, we executed the heavy lifting. We undertook a massive migration project, converting hundreds of historical PDF application notes into fully indexable, beautifully structured HTML web pages.

I oversaw the keyword mapping and page architecture to ensure HTML pages targeted specific, high-value search queries. We didn't dumb down the science, we simply engineered the pages so search engine crawlers could easily read, index, and rank them.

The Results: A Traffic Explosion and Increased Leads

By blending technical search strategy with their native scientific authority, the results blew past our original expectations:

  • From 4,500 to 45,000 Monthly Visitors: Within 18 months, our monthly organic traffic climbed to 20,000. By year two, it skyrocketed to 45,000 visitors per month, a 1,000% increase in global visibility. This wasn't vanity traffic. We were capturing highly targeted buyers.
  • Direct Commercial Growth: Our organic inbound funnel became a primary driver for new equipment sales, fundamentally changing how the company acquired global leads.

My Takeaways for Your SciComms

If you run a laboratory or scientific instrumentation manufacturing business, you are likely sitting on a similar hidden goldmine. Here's what I would do.

Stop Gating Your Best SciComms Content in PDFs

Use PDFs for printable offline sharing, but prioritise rich, indexable HTML for your core application data.

I see many businesses producing high quality research papers, uploading them to the website as pdfs and then asking potential customers to enter their email addresses in order to access the paper. In theory this is a great opportunity to capture their data. However, in reality, what happens is that people decide they either don't want to give you their email address and exit your web page or they insert a false email address. By keeping everything openly available, we let people access the information that they wanted, built trust and when they were ready, they came to us.

If you want to provide gated content, why not collate your html content into topics and prepare an eBook that they can download with all the papers in one handy overview for reference - but keep those individual html pages openly available.

Upskill Your Internal Experts

Your scientists and researchers hold the keys to your best marketing content. Empower them with basic SEO mechanics, and they will build your traffic engine for you.

At this point I would say that the scientists carried out all their own key word research and provided the text to the marketing team for uploading to the website. They even went as far as writing the alt-tag descriptions. (They were brilliant and really bought into it particularly when they saw the increased web traffic - they're scientists, they like to see the evidence.) As the marketing team had been trained in on-page SEO, it was a simple copy and paste job, inserting the images and then adding all the meta content, header tags, etc.

Target Customer Intent

Highly specific, technical, long-tail search terms attract ready-to-buy laboratory managers. Optimise for how they search, not just for your brand name.

This case study demonstrates the transformative power of knowledge sharing and targeted SEO, particularly when applied to a niche with highly specialised expertise and a need to reach a specific, technical audience. By focusing on making their existing content discoverable, the company unlocked significant online growth and directly impacted their bottom line.
